사회복지 기초학문으로 사회복지를 실천하고 정책과 제도를 만드는 기틀을 제공하는 역할을 하고 있는 사회복지조사론은 현실적으로 과학적· 체계적 방법을 통하여 현 상태에서 필요한 욕구뿐만 아니라 미래에 발생할 욕구까지 예측하여 사회문제를 해결할 수 있는 방법을 제시해주고 있다. 각종 사회문제의 해결을 목적으로 하는 사회복지프로그램의 형성 및 구체화를 통한 권위적인 가치 배분 활동을 하고 있는 사회복지정책의 관점에서 논리 실증주의에 바탕을 둔 연역적 방법으로 통계적 방법을 동원하는 양적조사와 사례연구에 바탕을 둔 귀납적 방법으로 결과를 이야기체로 보고하는 질적 조사의 장· 단점을 비교 연구하여 보도록 한다.
"Research methods for social work, performing a role offering framework of policies and systems of welfare service as academic foundation of social welfare, offer us ways to settle social problems through not only detecting current need of welfare service but also forecasting prospective needs of future with scientific·synthetic means. This article purposes to compare the merits and demerits of quantitative study that employs statistics in deductive reasoning based on logical positivism and qualitative study that reports the result in narrative form in inductive inference based on case study.
